Why locals choose us

Why Bury St Edmunds locals choose our pet shop

Independent, and proud of it

A small local shop, not a chain, with a passionate and knowledgeable team. Open seven days: Monday to Saturday from 9:30am, Sunday from 10:00am.

Fish specialists

Koi and tropical fish are our speciality, we’re an authorised TMC stockist for marine, and we offer water testing in the shop.

Reptiles, exotics and everyday supplies

Ask us about heat, light and set-up before you take a reptile home, then pick up supplies for dogs, cats, small pets and birds in the same trip.

Authorised TMC stockist

Marine fish and corals, ordered in from TMC

We’re an authorised stockist for TMC, the Tropical Marine Centre, a marine livestock wholesaler founded in 1970. Its range takes in fish such as clownfish, tangs and wrasses, hard and soft corals, and invertebrates from anemones to shrimp, with tank-bred and cultured stock alongside wild-caught.

On top of what’s in our tanks, we can order in from TMC’s range. Availability changes and we can’t promise any species at any time, so tell us what you’re after and we’ll tell you what’s realistic.

Setting up a tank

Your first tank in four steps

A new aquarium is a project, not an impulse buy. Take it in this order and your fish will thank you, and ask the team anything along the way.

Plan the tank

Choose the size and the spot first: a stable, level surface away from direct sun and radiators, with a power socket close by. Bigger tanks are usually easier to keep stable than very small ones.

Cycle it

Set up the filter, heater and water conditioner, then give the tank several weeks to build the beneficial bacteria that break down fish waste. Test the water before any fish go in.

Add fish slowly

Start with a few hardy fish and add more gradually, checking they suit each other and the tank. Float the bag to even out the temperature before you release them.

Keep it healthy

Feed lightly, do regular partial water changes and test now and then. Small habits, done often, beat big fixes done rarely.

Reptiles and exotics

Thinking about a reptile? Ask us first

Reptiles are fascinating animals, and they depend on you for heat, light and the right set-up. Ask us before you take one home, so the enclosure, temperatures and UVB lighting are sorted from day one.

Many reptiles live for years, so it’s worth choosing the right species for your home and experience. Tell us what you have in mind and we’ll talk it through.
