Welfare comes first
Welfare is central to how the shop is run. If the timing, set-up or plan isn't right for an animal, we'd rather say so than make the sale. The five welfare needs in the Animal Welfare Act 2006 make a good checklist.

Our story
A small independent pet shop near Bury St Edmunds, grown from converted pig sheds, with animal welfare at the centre of how it's run.
Fornham All Saints, just off the A14 near Bury St Edmunds. Open seven days.
Our story
Ornamental Fish Farm began in the mid-1980s and grew, as it expanded, out of converted pig sheds. It's not the glamorous origin you might expect from an independent pet shop near Bury St Edmunds that now looks after koi, reef fish and reptiles, but it's a true one, and we're rather fond of it.
The knowledge came with the shop. Pete, who owns it today, learned the trade from the founder, then took the business on. It has stayed independent ever since: one shop on Tut Hill in Fornham All Saints, just off the A14 and about 3.6 miles from Bury St Edmunds town centre.
Some things haven't changed since those early days. Welfare still comes first, the shop holds a current pet shop licence from the local authority with a five-star rating (licence reference AWL0141), and everything else, from the tanks to the advice, is built around that.
Tut Hill runs off the A14 at Fornham All Saints, which makes the shop an easy stop from Bury St Edmunds and the surrounding towns. If you're coming from further away, our Visit us page has drive times and a route from the A14.

Our specialism
Tell us what you're after and we'll tell you what's realistic.
We specialise in koi and tropical fish, and stock goldfish and other coldwater fish for garden ponds too. Bring your tank or pond measurements and a note of what already lives there, and we'll talk through what suits.
Reef keepers can ask us to order in from TMC's range of marine fish and corals. Availability changes, so we can't promise any species at any time, but we'll always give you a straight answer.
Our values
Welfare is central to how the shop is run. If the timing, set-up or plan isn't right for an animal, we'd rather say so than make the sale. The five welfare needs in the Animal Welfare Act 2006 make a good checklist.
Ask us before you buy. We'd rather you got it right the first time than came back with a problem, and sometimes the honest answer is "not yet".
We're one shop on Tut Hill, not one branch of many. Our decisions are about the animals and the customers in front of us, and about being a shop the neighbourhood is glad to have.
Pete runs an apprenticeship programme for young people, because good animal care is a skill worth handing on.
The shop
With a name like Ornamental Fish Farm, you'd expect fish, and you'd be right. There are tropical fish, marine fish and corals, and koi and coldwater fish, with pond supplies and aquarium equipment to go with them.
What to expect
Stock changes, so if you're coming for something in particular, call 01284 703418 first and we'll tell you what's in.
Wander round the fish, reptiles, small animals and birds.
Bring your questions. If you're planning a tank, pond or vivarium, bring its size and a note of what already lives in it.
A new pet is a long commitment, and it's perfectly fine to go home and think it over.
We're an authorised TMC stockist, so ask about ordering in from TMC's range.
We're open seven days a week: Monday to Saturday from 9:30am, and Sunday from 10:00am. Come on any day that suits you.
